Kaplan emphasises what a big impact a photo will have on its audience. He tells of how the photographer should not choreograph photographs (and MANY photographers do that. Also photographs should not be altered such as the Time magazine did to OJ Simpson - making him darker and therefore more evil than the original photo which appeared in Newsweek.
One particular job he had was to photograph a drug addict called Brian over several months. Brian was so co-operative that Kaplan questioned himself as to whether he was doing the right thing. What were Brian's motives? The photo with the most impact was of Brian shooting up. Kaplan received a Pulitzer prize in which some of these photos appeared.
